Constructivism Flashcards

1
Q

What does Alexander Wendt mean when he says “anarchy is what states make of it”? or Self help and power politics are institutions not essential features of anarchy….explain.

A

Self help and power politics are institutions not essential features of anarchy….I argue that self-help and power politics do not
follow either logically or causally from anarchy and that if today we find
ourselves in a self-help world, this is due to process, not structure

Q

What is meant by reflectivist

A

social theories which seek to explain identities and interests - Keohane has called them “reflectivist

Q

How does Wendt argue agst realism

A
  1. self-interested conceptions of security are not a constitutive property of anarchy eg states act differently towards enemies than towards friends- “intersubjetive understandings and expectations. identities are the basis of interests
  2. self help and competitiive power politics may be produced causally

Q

What does Wendt propose

A

Adding a fourth element to Waltz’s three part definition of structure to go from structure to action (A structure is defined first by the principle by which it is ordered or organized, then by the differentiation and specification of its units, and finally by the distribution of capabilities across units).: the intersubjectively constituted
structure of identities and interests in the system.

Q

Theory of structured realism

A

Structural realism holds that the nature of the international structure is defined by its ordering principle, anarchy, and by the distribution of capabilities (measured by the number of great powers within the international system). The anarchic ordering principle of the international structure is decentralized, meaning there is no formal central authority; every sovereign state is formally equal in this system. These states act according to the logic of egoism, meaning states seek their own interest and will not subordinate their interest to the interests of other states

Q

What is meant by the term idenitities

A

Actors acquire identities—relatively stable, role-specific understandings and
expectations about self—by participating in such collective meanings. Identities are the basis of intrests

9
Q

How does one describe the idea that self help is causally produced - not endemic to the system

A

It is through reciprocal interaction, in other words, that we create and
instantiate the relatively enduring social structures in terms of which we define
our identities and interests. - do-determination

Q

Predator states and anarchy

A

Some states have self regarding not collective identities….the predator argument. But, this does not necessarily result in war.Identities and interests are relationship-specific, not intrinsic

attributes of a “portfolio”; states may be competitive in some relationships and
solidary in others.

Q

How are identities created

A
  1. through density and regularity of interaction
  2. dissatisfaction with pre-existing forms of identify and interaction
institutionalise a mode of subjectivity and allow behaviour to substantiate the norm

Q

How would a neorealist or constructivist argue the non invasion of a weaker state

A
  1. realist would argue that sanctions or no interest or such would deter
  2. liberal might argue institutional sanction
  3. The
intersubjective understandings embodied in the institution of sovereignty, in
other words, may redefine the meaning of others’ power for the security of the
    self.

Q

How would a constructivist explain Gorbachev’s new thinking strategy

A
  1. a reason for actor to recast new social conditions that cannot be managed by pre-existig self conceptions
  2. unexpected cost of intentential role change cannot be greater than rewars

16
Q

constitutive norms

A

which create new actors, interests, or categories

of action

17
Q

evaluative

or prescriptive norms

A

prescriptive (or evaluative) quality of ‘‘oughtness’’ that sets norms
apart from other kinds of rules

18
Q

common knowledge

A

common knowledge (or what constructivists would call intersubjective understandings)

19
Q

Rationalist/positivist

A

lifted out of teh natural sciences: tease out the causal relations between independent and dependent variables (for example regime type)

20
Q

One sentence approach

A

int’l politics is not simply positively given, but socially constructed by the actors of international politics ie not ready made. what we need to look at is the processes by which the world was constructed

21
Q

Josef Lapid

A

The third debate

22
Q

Constructivism influences

A

Sociology - Agent Structure Debate (constructivism is broader than IR): what has primacy - chicken and egg. Agency is the human ability to act independently

23
Q

What is the constructivist critique

A

the four i’s the ontology

  1. immaterial versus material factors (guns and money - economic and security) - Social Theory of Int’l politics - agst Waltz Theory of Int’l politics - Wendt takes the same object, the system of states, but says you cannot simplify the system to the material
  2. ideational - norms, values, ideas, culture and knowledge ie non material factors - these were inferred in neoliberal institutionalism just not foregrounded in the ontology or the epistemology
  3. social construction of interests, which for rationalists is narrow. constructivists say there is no one size fits all…not just interest maximising….some states are interested in doing the right thing, sometimes at the expense of maximising their material interests - value their reputation
  4. consq the role of identities - their history, for example,
24
Q

Material structures

A

neorealism - distribution of capabilities - material power - structure
neoliberalism - economic -material interest - agent centric -
marxism - that part concerned with the structure - the base - the relations of production as determining

25
Q

Immaterial structures - values and histories

A

English School: set of theories in conversation on the other side of the Atlantic
Constructivism: took main stream head on
Post structuralism

26
Q

logics of theorising :Causality v constitutivity

A

Positivist ooks at causal relationship - constructivist look at constitutivity = influence of one thing on another -

27
Q

logics of theorising: Interests

A

interests not sui generis but like norms are socially generated - actors acquiers interests as a result of socialisation
