Amendments
CHANGES to the constitution
There have been 27 changes to the U.S.
Constitution up to this point.
1st Amendment
Freedom of Speech Freedom of Religion Freedom of the Press Freedom to assemble (protest) Freedom to petition the government (make requests)
2nd Amendment
The right to bear arms (own weapons)
4th Amendment
The government can’t search your property and take your stuff without a getting a warrant or without a reasonable suspicion wrongdoing
5th Amendment
You don’t have to give information that might get you in trouble with the law
You can’t be tried twice for the same crime
The government can take your land and/or property for public use as long as they pay you for it (this is called “eminent domain”)
6th Amendment
Right to an attorney
Right to a speedy trial by Jury
13th Amendment
Ended slavery
14th Amendment
If you are born in the U.S. you are a citizen of
the U.S.
All citizens equal protection under the law
15th Amendment
The Government cannot deny people the right to vote based on Race
Gave non-white men the right to vote
16th Amendment
The government can collect income tax
17th Amendment
Senators are directly elected by the people of their state, rather than being appointed by the state government
18th Amendment
Prohibition
Banned Alcohol everywhere in the U.S.
19th Amendment
Gave women the right to vote
21st Amendment
Repealed the 18th Amendment
Made alcohol legal again
26th Amendment
Citizens can vote at 18 years of age
