Civil duties
Things U.S. citizens MUST do.
Civil Responsibilities
Things U.S. citizens SHOULD do but aren’t required to do.
Anti-Federalists
They did not want the Constitution to be passed. They were mostly poor farmers.
Who were notable Anti-Federalists
George Mason, Elbrige Gerry, and Patrick Henry.
Constitutional Convention
A meeting to address the problems of the Articles of Confederation.
What did Anti-Federalists fear
To much power would create tyranny.

Checks and Balances
Every branch can check another to prevent tyranny.
Virginia Plan
The amount of representation in government is based on population.
Articles of Confederation
The first plan of government in the U.S. after independence was won.
Northwest Ordinence
Thomas Jefferson’s plan to separate the newly acquired land. This created townships and prevented slavery in these townships.
3/5 Compromise
Slaves count as 3/5 of a person - part of the Great Compromise
Federalism
The Federal Government and State government each have separate powers.
Amendment process for the constitution.
Proposed by 2/3 of states or legislature and passed by 3/4 of legislature or states.
Great Compromise
Created a bicameral legislature with 2 houses -the Senate, which has 2 people per state and the house of representatives, which is based on population.
Republicanism
People vote on who they want to represent them.
Limited Government
The government has limited powers to prevent tyranny.
Legislative Branch
A bicameral branch of the government that creates laws. It has the house of representatives and the Senate in it.
Bill of Rights
The first 10 amendments to the United States that protect peoples individual rights.
Federalists
People who supported the Constitution who were mostly rich people from the city. Examples include James Madison, Alexander Hamilton, and John Jay.
Popular Sovereignty
It is the belief that the people have power and is one of the 7 principles
Separation of Powers
The branches of the government all have separate functions.
Executive Branch
Enforces the law, can veto laws, and elects members of the judicial branch.
Shays Rebellion
Farmers were upset about taxes and not being payed back from their time in the war, so they rose up against the government, which was very weak due to the AOC
Judicial Branch
Interprets the laws and determines if laws are constitutional.
Republic
A form of government where the functions and powers are carried out by elected representatives
First Amendment
Freedom of speech, press, and religion
2nd Amendment
The right to have weapons
3rd Amendment
Soldiers can’t be quartered without consent in times of peace
4th Amendment
People’s homes can’t be searched without a warrant
5th Amendment
People don’t have to commit to a crime “I plead the fifth”
6th Amendment
The right to a speedy trial with a jury and a lawyer.
7th Amendment
People can take an issue to court and it will have a jury.
8th Amendment
No cruel or unusual punishments nor an excessive bail.
9th Amendment
People still have rights that aren’t listed in the constitution.
10th Amendment
The federal government’s powers are limited to the constitution yet the state has other powers as deemed fit.
