popular sovereignty
people are the source of any and all government power.
limited government
No government is all powerful. A government may only do those things the people gave it to do.
separation of powers
Each branch of government has its own distinct powers the other doesn’t.
checks and balances
When one branch uses a distinct power it has, it may check, or limit, the power of another branch
federalism
Government power is divided among the federal government and state and local governments
judicial review
Federal courts have the power to determine the constitutionality of an act of Congress or an action by the president
