A

Change from normal bowel habit (frequency or consistency)

Not opened bowels in 3 days

Why is it important to ask about urge to open bowels in constipation

A

If have urge - likely medication or diet/fluid related

If no urge - idiopathic slow transit constipation

Causes of constipation

A
Dehydration
Drugs - painkillers
Hypothyroidism
Hypercalcaemia
Idiopathic slow transit 
Obstruction

What is a transit study

A

Swallow 3 capsules on consecutive days (each capsule contains different shaped radiopaque beads)
AXR on 4th day

What is tenesmus

A

Sensation of urge to open bowels with little or no stool passed I.e feeling of incomplete bowel emptying
