As part of my learning the consultant has asked me to talk to you to practice my communication skulls, trhis will just take about 10 minutes would that be ok
when do you do intro
before sit down – otherwise you are assuming consent and not giving them an opportunity to say no
what is the first part of the consultation
When someone says pain- 1st thing to say – could you describe the pain for me/could you tell me more about that – find out more about the pain before limiting the conversation ie by asking about duration etc
give the pt the opportunity to speak - start with open questions

don’t just need to state it - need to establish what the issues actually are - therefore use open questions

Pick up and respond to cues
Acknowledge and respond appropriately to verbal and nonverbal indications from the patient/relative about their thoughts/feelings/questions.
how do you show that you are listening
through body language, encouragement to patient/relative to tell their ‘story’ and appropriate responses.
how do you sue empathy
Show empathy for patient’s/relative’s feelings and/or situation both verbally and through body language.

need to decide which is best for the situation
open to establish information non-directively and allow pt to take control
used closed when need to take back control or cover essential points eg lifestyle/symptoms
value of transition statements
help the patient to follow changes in subject matter/purpose of interview by clearly indicating new topic. E.g. “Now I need to ask you about…”
how do you offer support
Make supportive statements about the patient’s/relative’s feelings/situation and ofer practical support such as details of counselling services, appropriate literature.
