Q

why should we give time in sternal when turning from one lateral recumbency to another?

A

when in lateral the lower lung collapses

putting in sternal gives this lung a chance to gain full function - so letting both lungs inflate well

before turning and reducing function in the other lung

Q

anal/perineal surgeries sometimes require a head down angle, but what are the risks?

A

gravity pulls the abdomen contents onto the diaphragm causing pressure
- this then causes hypoventilation

can also put pressure on the vena cava effecting cardiac output
