Considerations for patient under GA Flashcards
what does excess movement/position changes increase the risk of?
regurgitation and aspiration
why should we avoid hanging limbs over the table edge?
to avoid compartment syndrome
- restriction of blood flow to limbs
why should we check our heat sources?
ensure they arent too hot and are well protected
to avoid burns/scolding
why should we disconnect the anaesthesia circuit to the ET tube when repositioning?
to prevent twisting/displacing the ET tube or causing tracheal trauma
why should we give time in sternal when turning from one lateral recumbency to another?
when in lateral the lower lung collapses
putting in sternal gives this lung a chance to gain full function - so letting both lungs inflate well
before turning and reducing function in the other lung
anal/perineal surgeries sometimes require a head down angle, but what are the risks?
gravity pulls the abdomen contents onto the diaphragm causing pressure
- this then causes hypoventilation
can also put pressure on the vena cava effecting cardiac output
