In most cases - ee & or share the right to make decisions about ee health care. Cant do treatment for ee if ee objects to it

HICAP - Health Insurance Counseling & Advocacy Program (HICAP) answers questions about health ins for elderly people
If ee not sound to make medical decisions
ck w atty, to ask judge to take away eee rights to make medical trmet & give right to “or”
if granted, u will recieve a new set of Letters with this authority
Try to involve the ee as much as possible & respect her desires - talk to family & friends to figure out what ee would have wanted
Religious beliefs must be respected
ck on advance health care directive - find out who has original
Never consent to medical treatment
cant do the following:
sterilization, mental health treatment if objects, no mental health tremt facility, no electroshock therapy, experimental drugs, involuntary admin of psychotropic drugs to treat dementia
dr should examine ee how often
1x a month
Other tools to help ee
hear aid, dental, eyeglasses & other devices - walkers, canes, oxygen, etc.
Proper foot care, encourage cleanliness
Problems that may lead to poor nutrition
loneliness, depression, stress, death of loved one, lack of $
Case mgmt Service
can help figure out what types of assistance the ee needs & refer to personal, health, mental health & social services
mgr may help u carry out your plan. can be done by private professional & community based agencies
