conservatism Flashcards

1
Q

to what extent do conservatives agree on the nature of the econemy

A

point 1= partly disagree
-one nation believe in keynsianism, a mixed econemy, where the state are involved in regulating the economy.
-new right- extremelly minimal state intervention, laissez faire capitalism and free markets, practically no state intervention- ayn rand
-traditional- agree with aspects of both e.g. believe in a minimal state with litle economic interventon however do not believe in laissez faire capitalism like the new right

Point 2=
one nation- belief in paternalism and a natural heirarchy, there for idea of noblesse oblige where the rich have an obligation to help the poor
new right= would disagree with one nation and the idea of noblesse oblige, rand believes no one has an obligation to anyone else and people are self interested and rightly so, also rand belived in private property saying that it developed effort and innovation
traditional= agreed with new right on issues around private property as burke said it developed responsability

Q

to what extent do conservative agree over the role of the state

A

point 1= agree, libertarianism
- new right= neo libs like rand, state should have no right to interfere in individual freedoms, therefor took a relaxed view on abortion and homosexuality as these where individual freedoms that cnnot be controlled by the state
-traditional= hobbes stated that the state should be autocratic so power is centralised in one place showing how they think there should be limits on power
- one nation= oakshott state is there to “prevent the bad rather than create the good” shows how they also believe the power of the state is limited

point 2= pragmatism, partly disagree
traditional= burke and empiricism “change to conserve” change should be slow and based on what has worked in the past
-one nation= oakshott conservatives “prefer the familiar to the unknown” also belived change should be slow, state interferance in the welfae system e.g. reforms
-new right= disagree with one nation and how they think the state should be more involved in the econemy e.g. through keynsian econmics, state should let the econemy and society do its thing
