Forest Reserve Act of 1891

Provided the main statutory basis for the management of forest reserves in the USA. The first step toward legislation concerning the management, protection and care of the nation’s forest reserves.
Organic Act of 1897 (aka Sundry Civil Appropriations Act of 1897)

Established to protect nesting birds. Executive order of President Theodore Roosevelt on March 14, 1903. Was created to protect egrets and other birds from extinction through plume hunting.
1903 Pelican Island Wildlife Refuge

Gifford Pinchot, the national forest reserves were transferred from the Department of Interior to the Department of Agriculture. Included over 63 million acres of forest reserves and over 500 employees.
Caused the National Forest Reserves to shift roles, from a recreational role to a more scientific role.

Act signed by Theodore Roosevelt on June 8, 1906 giving the president authority by executive order, the right to restrict use of particular public land. Resulted from concerns about protecting mostly prehistoric Indian ruins and artifacts.
Antiquities Act of 1906

Created the legal definition of “wilderness” in the United States. Protected 9.1 million acres of federal land creating the National Wilderness Preservation System. Howard Zahniser creates first draft in 1956. Signed by President Lyndon Johnson.
