Conservation of Freshwater Flashcards
Freshwater systems include
Rivers, canals, ponds etc
Threats include
Pollution, groundwater, eutrophication, runoff, high phosphate and nitrate
Changes of freshwater habitat
Channelization occurs and accelerates water through an area, alters the flow, tunnels block out sunlight, steep concrete banks, can’t grow anything and if organisms can’t cope then they don’t survive
Pond Case study
Looked at different habitats in Birmingham, wanted to investigate where ponds were found
Are ponds more valuable with different surrounding areas?
Different types of ponds
T1: Macrophyte rich, open, low nutrients
T2: Concrete, macrophyte poor, high nutrient, urban
T3: Macrophyte rich, low nutrients, ephemeral
T4: Shaded, macrophyte poor, high nutrients, urban
Otters case study
Low otter numbers due to persistent organochlorine, also accumulate in sediment and rivers
Legislation changed
Reintroduciton programme was introduced and otter numbers recovered
