Conservation and Humankind Flashcards
Why include local populations with conservation?
Opportunity to learn
Protected Areas
Don’t always contain the highest levels of biodiversity, can be protected for other reasons e.g. royalty or military
Explain bottom-up conservation
Site-specific analysis has occurred, so conservation isn’t detrimental to local communities
Simien National Park Case study
Locals were cutting down trees for resources, conservationists told them to stop they said no and this led to riots, can’t just say no need to provide alternatives
Land Tenure
Can be given away to ensure conservation efforts, and helps resolve ownership issues, creates a greater value of the protected areas
Monkey and palms case study
Compromise is necessary, there is conflict between local communities in Kenya and endangered mangabeys, During dry season monkeys ate the fruits of palm trees, however, locals used this to weave fishing baskets and make tourist gifts. Unsustainable as locals were killing palm trees, so conservationists grew more plants and carefully regulated the harvesting of palms as well as cultivated it outside of the reserve
Benefits of PA for locals
Participation in park management
Local services such as education and health care
Allowance to continue hunting on the land
Involvement in park-related tourism
Characteristics of indigenous knowledge
Based on long experience Dynamic and changing Tested over centuries of use Localised Orally transmitted
Indigenous knowledge can be associated with…
Current, past and potential use of plant and animal species
preparation, processing and storage of some species
Formulations with more than one ingredient
Husbandry methods
Holistic conservation procedures
Methods used to assess Indigenous knowledge
Observations Focus groups Questionnaires Interviews Ranking and sorting Mapping Group Treks Four cell analysis Memory banking
Heritage seed library case study
Aims to conserve old varieties of vegetables, protects them from being replaced by modern cultivars
However expensive to be on the list £5k,
Has 10,000 members and are sent seed packed quarterly
Ecotourism
Allowed undisturbed natural areas to be maintained, but needs to include local communities
Kangaroo island inject $500,000 but brings $5.6million in revenue
Wild systems provide ecosystem services including…
Food security Buffer Nutritional source generate income Direct benefits Indirect benefits
