conservation exsitu Flashcards
what is conservation exsitu
conservation outside the normal habitat of a species
how do zoos help conserve a species through reproductive physiology
allow captive breeding
invitro fertilisation
artificial insemination
embryo transfer
what is embryo transfer (last stage of ivf)
an embryo which has been left to grow is then transferred into the uterus of an individual where it can implant and become a fetus
what is captive breeding
is the process of keeping animals or plants in a controlled environment
what is in vitro fertilisation (IVF)
fertility treatment where sperms are treated to an egg outside the individuals body and in a lab.
what are the advantages of exsitu conservation
animals can be medically monitored
can be used as education
allows selective breeding increasing genetic diversity
protection from predators and poachers
what is selective breeding
breeding can be carried out to increase genetic diversity
what are the disadvantages of ex situ conservation
limited genetic diversity of captive population
living outside natural habitat
nutritional issues can be difficult to manage
animals may not behave as normal, reproduction may suffer
reproduced individuals need to survive reintroduction to the wild where they find food and survive predation. May not be accepted by other wild members
what are the difficulties faced with reintroduction
faced with-
might not be accepted by other wildlife members
need to survive predation
need to find their own food.
What is a botanic garden
ex-situ conservation of plants.
They store seeds in large numbers and are germinated .
why can funding a botanical garden be difficult
public perception of plants isnt the same as animals, fewer people are willing to sponsor or donate
what are the disadvantages to botanical gardens
reduce genetic diversity as plants that are bred asexually
seeds collected from one area are genetically different to those from a different area, therefore may not survive in a different area
collecting wild seeds will always cause disturbance
what is a seed bank
collection of seed samples. Type of exsitu
what is the difference between the viability of seeds between seed banks and botanical gardens
botanical gardens- seeds stored for a length of time not be viable (dead and cant grow)
Seed banks-contain many seeds that can remain viable for decades
what are the 2 benefits of seed banks
1- provide seeds for food crops
2- seeds can also be used for habitat reclamation and repopulate endangered habitats
