What is the ICUN
the international union for the conservation of nature.
this is described as the global authority on the status of the natural world and the measures to save it.
what are the duties of the ICUN
they assess the conservation status of animal and plant species around the world.
they do this by having their own classification system, which has several categories which species can fall into depending on their population numbers and their threats and risks.
the most critical species are on the ICUN red list.
what is the CBD
the convention on biological diversity.
this was created at the earth summit in RIO 1992.
what are the 3 main goals of CBD
-conservation of biological diversity by using a variety of different methods.
-sustainable use of biological resources
- fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from genetic resources.
what is CITES
the convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna.
this has been signed by over 150 countries.
what is the aim of CITES
to contr9ol the trade of endangered species and their associated products eg; elephants and tusks.
what are the 3 appendices of CITES
1- endangered species facing great risk of extinction eg; red panda. All trading is banned.
2- species not currently endangered but will be if trade is not controlled eg; venus fly trap. trade is only granted with an export permit.
3- species that are included at the request of a country that is regulating their trade and trying to prevent its overexploitation eg; two toed sloth in costa Rica. permits are required but more easily obtained.
