Conservation Flashcards
What is preservation?
- it is the protection of ecosystems so they’re kept exactly as they are
- nothing is removed or changed from a preserved ecosystem and they’re only used for activities that don’t damage them
Why is conservation important?
• economic reasons
- provide resources for lots of things that’s humans need e.g. Clothes, food drugs
- economically important as they are traded on a global scale
• social reasons
- if they weren’t conserved there would be less trade in the future
- many ecosystems bring joy to lots of people because they’re attractive to look at and people use them for activities e.g. Walking, birdwatching
- so must be conserved so that future generations can use them and enjoy them
• ethical reasons
- moral responsibility to conserve ecosystems for future generations
- conserving species is the right thing to do as organisms have a right to exist and humans have a responsibility to look after them not destroy them
What is conservation?
• it is maintaining biodiversity (diversity between species, genetic diversity within species and the maintenance of habitats and ecosystems)
• it is a dynamic process
- conservation methods need to be adapted to the constant changes that occur within ecosystems
• involves the management of ecosystems
- controlling how resources are used and replaced
• involves reclamation
- restoring ecosystems that have been damaged or destroyed so they can be used again
