What does Deontology focus on?
Focuses on the rightness or wrongness of actions in-themselves, as opposed to the rightness or wrongness of the consequences of those actions
What is the categorical imperative?
Act as you would want all other people to act towards all other people.
The principle of autonomy
We are subject to moral law because it is necessary for our own nature as moral agents
Problems with utilitarianism
Slavery, vote buying, false execution. VIOLATES THE PRINCIPLE OF RIGHT
The principle of the end in itself
We are bound to treat ourselves and others, never simply as a means, but always as the at the same time as ends.
What is consequentialism?
A theory that says whether something is good or bad, but it depends on it on its outcomes and action that brings about more benefit than harm is good well, an action that causes more harm and benefit is not.
What is the difference between utilitarianism and consequentialism?
Consequentialism does not specify a desired outcome, while utilitarianism and specifies good as the desired outcome.
What is the principle of utility?
When should always act in such a way as to bring about (maximize) the greatest good, and the least harm for the greatest number of people.
What is act utilitarianism?
Considers only the results or consequences of the single act.
What is rule utilitarianism?
Considers a consequences that result of following a rule of conduct. IT SHOULD ALWAYS BE FOLLOWED
What is just distribution?
Principle of Acquisition, Transfer, and rectification of injustice
