Homelessness ?
A
- Homelessness = lack of shelter in which to sleep and carry out basic activities such as bathing
- People who are homeless may find themselves in a cycle, moving back and forth between the streets and shelters
- Often suffer from poor health - because of the exposure to the cold or rain, hunger and lack of sleep
- Suffer illnesses - such as skin infections, respiratory problems and stress disorders

Pollution = introduction of substances into the natural environment that results in unpleasant or damaging effects to the environment and human health

A
- Rivers near slum areas - become badly polluted - used for washing, garbage and sewage disposal
- Contaminants from sewage may seep into groundwater - pollute nearby water sources - such as wells
- Contaminated water can cause diseases - such as cholera or dysentary when consumed

A
- Lack of proper garbage disposal system - may lead to dumping of garbage into open drains and areas outside houses
- Improper disposal of garbage - can attract pests - such as rats - that carry along germs and bacteria - which can be harmful to humans
- E.g. Guanabara Bay - Rio De Jeneiro, Brazil - polluted as a result of untreated sewage from nearby slums
