Characteristics - Floods Flashcards
Types of Floods
- Coastal Floods
- River Floods
- Flash Floods
Coastal Floods ?
characteristics
- large waves crashing violently against the houses
- caused by an earthquake
- source of water is from ocean waves
- occur in areas along the coast
caused by intense storms - tropical storms and tropical cyclones
Strong winds during these storms generate large waves - storm surges
can also be caused by tsunamis - huge ocean waves -typically caused by undersea earthquakes - can sometimes reach heights of over 30 metres
River Floods?
Characteristics
occur when the volume of water in a river channel increases beyond the capacity of the channel
Water thus overflows the riverbanks and onto the foodplain
Foodplains = low-lying land on either side of the river channel
The raised banks on either side of the river channel - leeves
Possible causes of river floods - snowmelt, heavy rainfall and dam failure
