Biggest consequence was political as it allowed unification to become more likely.

  • Duggan “it had gone too far on its way to be stopped.”
  • Imposition of the Rome and Venetian Republics by Mazzini;
  • Some regarded the republics as too extremist, it certainly displayed the potential for the alleviation of Austrian rule and the subsequent imposition of a new form of government.
  • For, it allowed the leaders of revolution to realise unification only possible with foreign assistance.
  • Highlighted by humiliating defeats: Battle of Novara, Piedmont suffered 1,100 deaths vs Austria’s 420. Led to joining Crimean War in 1854. Also saw growth in nationalism as created further common resentment of Austrian rule.

This saw Cavour enter into the Crimean War and later sign the Pact of Plombieres with the French to gain the foreign support required to rid the Italian peninsula of Austrian influence.

  • Connubio in 1852 and Siccardi Laws in 1850 limit the power of the king and the church giving more power to the government
