Informed Consent

Implied consent
Consent that is presumed
Expressed consent
Verbal, nonverbal, or written communication by a patient who wishes to receive treatment. Act of calling EMS usually is considered this
Involuntary consent
Consent for treatment granted by court order, usually with patients with mental health
What to do if patient refuses service
Make reasonable efforts to inform pt or SDM that Tx is recommended, confirm pt has capacity, advise pt to call 911 if problem gets worse, obtain signatures
When may the paramedic transport without consent
Pt does not have capacity, pt is suffering or at risk and Tx is administered promptly it will cause harm, delay required for consent will prolong suffering
What is a corners inquest
Open and public hearing from coroner after a death, intended to make facts and circumstances of the death public
What power does a coroner have
They can access info freely, investigate areas a death occurred without warrants, request documentation without subpoenas
Medical TOR Tx
Greater than 16 years old, no arrest witnessed by EMS, no ROSC after 20 mins, no defib delivered
Contraindications of Medical TOR
Known reversible cause, hypothermia, pregnancy assumed greater than 20 weeks, airway obstruction, non-opioid drug overdose
