Why would people become conchies?
-On moral grounds - killing was wrong
-belonged to religious groups
-after their experience in the war
-wrong to fight as they were not directly threatened

-increasing power of the state over people’s choices

This was given to men in a public place to show they were cowards - symbol of cowardness

-hard labour
-forced to work in dangerous conditions
-Shunned by friends and family

-some respected their stance
-attacked in streets
-Verbally abused
-Force fed
-Fed on bread and water
-Guns being pointed at them
-Tied into straight jackets
