Consciousness Flashcards
Cognitive Unconscious
Broad set of mental activities that make cognition possible (eg, memory recall, heuristics, perception).
Consciousness and Unconsciousness
Conscious thinking (decision making, problem solving etc) is guided by an unconscious framework that guides the approach to the problem and solution.
Blindsight
People with damage to their visual cortex (ie blind) insist they see nothing, but guesses are often accurate.
Unconscious Judgements
Fast, efficient and reasonably accurate. Habit based and not subject to control (eg we can be aware of memory errors but still make them).
Dual Aspect Theory
Consciousness and brain activity are one process with two parts (internal awareness of information from brain systems and mental states that influence physical states).
Neuronal Workspace
Areas of the brain have discrete functions. Workspace neurons connect these areas to create a unified experience. This allows us to construct complete representations, direct focus, think about stimuli that are not present and shift between brain areas.
Synchrony
Multiple brain areas are linked in different ways. This is coordinated, coherent and controlled.
Consciousness and Action
Theorised that information must be conscious in order for us to act on it and this information needs justification to take it seriously, (eg blindsight).
