Consciousness Flashcards
Define Circadian rhythm
changes to our physiological function or activity that occur as part of a cycle that lasts around 24 hours
what is an Ultradian rhythm
changes in physiological function of activity that occur as part of a cycle between one hour and 24 hours
define consciousness
the awareness of internal and external stimuli
the continuum of consciousness
a progression of states of consciousness ranging from least aware to most aware
LEAST ALERT coma anaesthetised alcohol-induced sleep meditation drowsy day dreaming relaxed state focussed attention MOST ALERT
define NWC
the state of being awake and aware of internal and external stimuli
define ASC
a state of consciousness that is characterised by different levels of awareness as compared to normal waking consciousness
psychological construct
an agreed upon way of understanding and describing psychological phenomena
what is sleep debt
I LOVE YOU BABY -
not getting enough sleep and have to make up for it with a longer time spent in stage 4 NREM sleep.
selective attention
is the process of focusing on a particular object in the environment for a certain period of time.
divided attention
occurs when mental focus is on multiple tasks or ideas at once. Also known as multitasking, individuals do this all the time.
example of the circadian rhythm
sleep-wake cycle - 24 hours
example of the ultradian rhythm
the sleep cycle, occurs multiple times in a night
what part of the brain regulates the sleep-wake cycle
SCN- suprachiasmatic nucleus
partial sleep deprivation
occurs when a person does not get the amount of sleep they need or are deprived of one particular sleep stage.
Restorative theory
sleep allows the bodies to recharge and recover from the psychological and physical work during the day, and allow our bodies to grow.
