What is the job of the brain stem?
Directs movement, scans our environment for potential threat or danger.
What is the job of the Amygdala?
Houses our emotions.
What is the job of the higher cortex?
Planning, Organizing, Analyzing, Logical thinking.
What happens in the brain when we sense danger?
The amygdala cuts off the the Higher Cortex and ‘hijacks’ the body and brain in order to act quickly, and sometimes even irrationally.
What action can we take to tell the brain we are not in danger?
We can take long deep breaths, which sends a signal to the brain that we are not facing any danger.
What is the ‘Negativity bias’?
Tendency for our brain to focus on what is ‘negative’ far more than on what is positive.

What is the benefit of humans having a negativity bias?
This is what has allowed us to avoid danger and stay alive for millions of years.
