Conning Flashcards
What is variation?
The angular difference between magnetic and true north.
What does the acronym TVMDC stand for?
True (direction, north) Variation Magnetic Deviation Compass (direction, degrees)
Tv makes dull children - Thanks Very Much District Commander
What is deviation?
The angular difference between magnetic and compass north, as caused by proximity of ferrous object.
When converting from true to compass direction, is eastern variation added or subtracted from the true (chart) direction?
Subtracted. East is least and West is best.
What is the limerick to remember the operation utilized when putting true direction and variation together to come up with magnetic direction?
East is least and West is best.
What is a range?
Two identifiable objects in a line. Man made such as Silver Islet or natural such as islands.
When going from True to Compass direction, is it correcting or uncorrecting?
Uncorrecting. You correct to ‘make it’ True.
When using range markers, how should you correct your course?
Pointing at the bottom range.
When going from magnetic to true direction, what is the conversion called?
Correcting.
Describe a West cardinal buoy.
YBY, flash 9 triangles pointing towards center.
Describe a East cardinal buoy.
BYB flashing every 3 seconds. Safe water to East. Two triangles bases together.
Sailing in the dark, you see a white light flashing every six seconds.
South cardinal buoy. YB. Two triangles pointing down. Safe water to south.
On the chart you see Q(6)+L Fl 15 s What does that mean?
Quick six white flashes plus one long flash every 15 seconds.
What is the difference between conning and navigation?
Conning is by eye on the water, navigation should be before you go out on the water, with a chart.
What colour is a starboard buoy?
Red
What colour is a port buoy?
Green
What hazards are not written on charts?
Deadheads, currents, weather, whitewater, dams.
What is piloting?
Navigating on small inland lakes and coastal waters. You will therefor always have aids because you will always be able to see land.
