LAN (Local Area Network)
A
- these are located on 1 site and owned by 1 organisation
- services provided for the use of its users who need to be within the LAN to access them

WAN (Wide Area Network)
A
- if each of the LAN’s are joined together then a WAN is formed
- the organisation will normally own the internal network hardware, but they will normally be using a public network to connect each of the separate branches

MAN (Metropolitan Area Network)
A
- these must be connected together within the metropolitan city area
- may cover a row of buildings or a city
- can be operated as a public service or by a number of companies grouping together to build their own

Satellite
A
ability to transmit and receive data from a relatively small satellite dish on Earth and communicate with an orbiting geostationary satellite 22,300 miles above Earth’s equator.
