Connective Tissues (Fibrous) Flashcards
What is the Extra cellular matrix
gel like substance with embedded protein fibers
mineralized in bone
-carries O2, Co2, nutrients, waste
What are the Major classification groups of CT
embryonic CT
Adult CT (fibrous, can be loose, regular, irregular)
Special-adipose, cartilage, bone, hematopoetic
What is the Function of CT
structural framework of body protection supports and interconnects energy storage transport fluids defense
fibroblast function
produce collagen, proteoglycans, glycoproteins
mesenchymal cell function
connective tissue stem cells
adipocytes function
store and release fats
chondrocytes
produce and maintain cartilage components
osteoblasts
produce bone components
hematopoietic stem cells
produce RBC and immune cells
What is the function of collagen and what component are they part of?
resist tension, part of fibrous component of the ECM of CTs
What is the function of elastin? what is it a component of?
stretch, part of fibrous component of ECM of CTs
what is the function of reticular fibers?
forms supportive meshwork, part of fibrous component
What causes scurvy
deficiency in vitamin C, weakens collagen
What is marfans syndrome?
- weak elastin, due to mutation in fibrillin-I gene
- targets ocular, skeletal, and CV systems
- life threatening CV issues (dissecting aneurysms, mitral prolapse)
What are the amorphous ground substances of the ECM
proteoglycans, hyaluronan, glycoproteins
What are some characteristics of embryonic CT?
- rich in ECM and mesenchymal stem cells
- wartons jelly in umbilical cord
What are some characteristics of adult mesenchymal cells?
self renewing, differentiate into fibroblasts, muscle cells, osteoblasts, chondroblasts, adipocytes
What are the two subclasses of connective tissue proper? (fibrous)
loose, dense
What are examples of loose connective tissue?
areolar tissue
adipose tissue
reticular tissue
What are examples of dense CT?
dense irregular (dermis) dense regular (tendons) elastic tissue-rich in elastin
What is the difference between dense irregular and dense regular CT?
dense irregular has randomly deposited fibers
regular has highly regular pattern
What are the cell types in loose areolar CT?
Loose CT fixed -fibroblasts -adipocytes -mesenchymal Wandering -macros -mast cells -lymphocytes -plasma cells
function of loose connective tissue?
support and bind other tissues, hold fluids, defend against infection
-found immediately beneath membranous epithelia (lamina propria)
What is the function of adipose CT?
Loose CT energy source, insulation, found kinda everywhere, looks like bubbles
What are the types of fat and what is the difference?
white fat-energy, insulation, cushoning
brown fat-thermogenic use, lots in newborns
What are the characteristics of reticular CT?
Loose CT
reticular fibers
-forms open framework for holding cells
-found in liver, bone marrow, lymph nodes, spleen
What is the principle cell type in dense irregular and regular CT?
fibroblasts
Where would you find dense irregular CT?
dermis, capsules surrounding organs, perichondria, fascia
What is the function of dense regular CT?
resist pulling forces, appears wavy when not under tension
where would you find dense regular CT?
tendons, ligaments, aponeuroses, dense fascia, joint capsules
Where would you find elastic CT?
blood vessels, bronchiole tubes, special ligaments
What is the function of a fibroblast?
produce collagen, elastin, reticular fibers, proteoglycans in the ECM
