connective tissue Flashcards
name the three categories of connective tissue
- loose
- dense
- specialised
define connective tissue
type of tissue found in the human body whose main function is to bind and support structures within the body
define extracellular matrix and what is it made up of?
a non-cellular matrix that provides structural and biochemical support to surrounding cells
made up of ground substance and fibres
what is ground substance?
the gel-like substance that contains all components of the extraceullular martix apart from fibres
made up of substances such as water, glycoproteins and glycosaminoglycans
what is fibroblast?
a type of cell found in connective tissue that produces and maintains the EM
produces collagen
what type of connective tissue is osteocytes found in?
bone
what type of connective tissue are chondrocytes found in?
cartilage
what type of connective tissue are adipocytes found in?
fats
what structural components make up loose connective tissue?
large amounts of ground substances and fewer fibres
what structural components make up dense connective tissue?
large amounts of fibres and less ground substance
what is the difference between dense regular and dense irregular?
regular = uniform, parallel fibres
irregular = random arrangement
