Connective Tissue Flashcards
Characteristics of connective tissue
1) More matrix than cells.
2) Fibers running through the matrix.
3) Job is to hold things together and provide structure and support.
4) Vascularity differs with different connective tissues.
5) Cells are named by the tissue they make.
The three types of fibers
collagen fibers, reticular fibers, and elastic fibers
These are 1 of the strongest proteins the body makes. They are formed by the cell. Vitamin C and the mineral copper are needed to form these.
collagen fibers
Tiny versions of collagen fibers. Look like spider webs.
reticular fibers
These fibers can return to their original position once they have been pulled or stretched.
elastic fibers
Loose CT designed to store fat.
adipose tissue
Where is adipose tissue found in the body?
beneath the skin, around joints, padding the kidneys and other internal organs
Bone cells are also known as?
osteocytes
Why does cartilage heal slowly?
Because cartilage lacks a vascular system.
The cell in CT that produces collagen and other fibers.
Fibroblasts
More room in the matrix equals?
more blood vessels found
What type of leukocyte is commonly found in CT releasers histamine or heparine.
mast cell
The difference between histamine and heparine
histamine = coagulant heparine = anticoagulant
The fluid filled space between cells is called?
the matrix
The matrix in blood is called?
plasma
