Connecting Cells in Tissues Flashcards
Tight Junctions
L- Exists in exposed surfaces of cell lining. Digestive Tract
F- Strongest Junction, water tight. Formed in a back and forth layer, like yarn
S- Formed by fusion of the lipid layers of neighboring cell membranes
Desmosomes
L- The skin
F- very strong, formed in straight lines
S- Formed by a layer of “cement” reinforced by protein filaments
Gap Junctions
L- most common in cardiac and smooth muscle
F- allows cells to communicate directly
S- Protein “holes” that connect two cells together
Basement Membranes
L- anywhere there is epithelia tissue
F- anchors epithelial tissue to connective tissue
S- anchored by non-living substances. Lacks blood vessels, and are continuously replaced.
