Connected Speech Processes Flashcards
Assimilation
A sound becomes more similar to a nearby sound to ease articulation
Regressive / anticipatory assimilation
Value(s) of one (several) phonetic feature(s) of following segment anticipated OR occurs when following sound in a word influences the preceding sound (a<b)
Progressive assimilation / Persevartive or lag assimilation
Value(s) of one (several) phonetic feature(s) of preceding segment taken over OR occurs when the preceding sound in a word influences the following sound (a>b)
Reciprocal assimilation / coalescence or fusion
Two adjacent (nearby) sounds influence each other and result in one intermediate sound
Place of assimilation
Sounds become more similar in terms of place of articulation
Manner of assimilation
Sounds become more similar in terms of manner of articulation
Energy / Intensity / Voicing assimilation
Sounds become more similar in terms of voicing
Dissimilation
A process whereby one sound becomes less like a neighbouring sound or a sound in close proximity
Elision
Omission of a sound (phoneme), often to make speech faster or more fluid
Linking

Epenthesis / Intrusion
Insertion of an extra sound between two sounds where there is no corresponding letter in the spelling to aid the transition (can be vowel or consonant)
