Presentation of Allergic conjunctivitis
Rapid onset
Bilateral itching of eyes
conjunctival oedema
eyelid swelling
red eyes
minimal discharge
eyelids not affected
settles after removal of allergen
maybe Hx of hay fever/atopy
Presentation of Bacterial conjunctivitis
acute onset red eyes
often one eye involved first
Bilateral sticky eyes
eyelids stuck in the morning
mild itchiness
no reduction in vision
Presentation of Viral conjunctivitis
watery discharge from both eyes
red eyes
preauricular nodes may be enlarged
often presents after a URTI
vision not affected
Treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis
broad spectrum chloramphinacol, gentamicin, or fusidic acid
Treatment of viral conjunctivitis
no treatment usually needed
