Congenital heart disease Flashcards
Name two examples of congenital heart disease
Bicuspid aortic valve atrial septal defect ventricular septal defect coarctation of the aorta fallot's tetralogy
Two symptoms of atrial septal defect?
dyspnoea, arrhythmia, chest pain
Name one complication of atrial septal defect?
Eisenmenger’s syndrome- R to L shunt therefore cyanosis
Which genetic disease is associated with coarctation of the aorta?
Turner’s syndrome
Name one clinical sign observed in coarctation of the aorta
radio-femoral delay
HTN
systolic murmur
What is the structural abnormality in coarctation of the aorta?
narrowing of aorta
Name two complications of ventricular septal defect
Eisenmenger’s (same as for atrial septal defect)
IE
What is the structural abnormality in Fallot’s tetralogy?
Abnormal separation of truncus arteriosus into aorta and
pulmonary arteries
Which genetic disease is associated with fallot’s tetralogy?
Di George
Coeur en sabot is a sign of which congenital disease on CXR?
Fallot’s tetralogy
What is Eisenmenger syndrome?
Eisenmenger syndrome occurs when the pressure in the pulmonary arteries becomes so high that it causes oxygen-poor (blue) blood to flow from the right to left ventricle and then to the body, causing cyanosis. The high pressure also causes the wall of your heart’s right ventricle to thicken (hypertrophy).
What is the ductus arteriosis?
structure that allows blood to bypass the undeveloped lungs in foetus. Connects pulmonary artery to descending aorta
What is a fontan circulation?
A process that involves diverting the venous blood from the inferior vena cava (IVC) and superior vena cava (SVC) to the pulmonary arteries without passing through the morphologic right ventricle. This is done when surgery for univentricular heart is not possible.
