conformity vs obedience Flashcards
according to milgarm (1992)
Both conformity and obedience involve the “…abdication of individual judgement in the face of some external social pressure…”.
difference #1
In conformity, there is no explicit requirement to act in a certain way, whereas in obedience we are being ordered or instructed to do something.
difference #2
In conformity, those who influence us are our peers (equals) and people’s behaviour becomes more alike (homogenisation of behaviour). In obedience, there is a difference in status from the outset, with the authority figure influencing another person with inferior power or status: there is no mutual influence.
difference #3
Conformity has to do with the psychological ‘need’ for acceptance by others, and entails going along with one’s peers in a group situation. Obedience has to do with the social power and status of an authority figure in a hierarchical situation.
difference #4
In addition, Brown (1986) says that conformity behaviour is affected by example (from peers or equals), while obedience is affected by direction (from somebody in higher authority).
