BBC prison study by…?
Reicher and Haslam
procedure
randomly assigned men to the tole of prisoner or guard and examined their behaviour within a specially created ‘prison’
15 male pps divided into 5 groups and were matched on key personality variables and one was randomly chose to be guard and other two prisoners -how long was the study run for?
8 days
Findings
Pp’s didn’t conform automatically to their assigned roles as had happened in SPE.
The prisoners increasingly identified as a group and worked together to challenge authority of the guards.
Guards also failed to identify with their role which made them reluctant to impose their authority o the prisoners
This had led to a shift of power and the collapse of the prisoner-guard system
