- in situations where you dont know the norms and so look for other people for how to behave
- e.g pretending ur support a particular football team because the rest of your freindship does it is an emotion process, wanting to be liked
- and can explain compliance most shallow form of conformity

- however, may be individuals differences, mcghee and teevan found that students with a personality & social relationships, were more likley to conform than the rest, displays how the desire to be liked might affect some more than others

- it is unclear if nsi or isi opperates in studies and real life.
- a dissenter may reduce the power of nsi (social support) or reduce the power of isi (alternative source) therefore isi and nsi are hard to seperate
