Conformity Flashcards
What are the three types of conformity?
Compliance
Identification
Internalisation
What is compliance?
Compliance is when a person publicly agrees with the majority but privately disagrees with them. The person will not change their permanent opinions.
Example of compliance
Bullying someone because the majority are doing it despite knowing that what you are doing is wrong
What is identification?
Identification is when a person is influenced by a group of people because they want to be associated with that group.
Example of identification
Starting to listen to music to identify as part of a group and starting to enjoy it
What is internalisation?
Internalisation is when you both publicly and privately agree with the majority. This permanently changes your opinion and you will act in this way regardless of whether or not you are with the group.
Example of internalisation
Bullying someone that the majority is bullying and knowing privately that this person deserves to be bullied
What is conformity?
Conformity is when people act in ways that the majority acts in; you do as they do / go along with the group. There are three different types of conformity: internalisation, compliance and identification.
