what is conformity?
a type of social influence where individuals change their behaviour, attitudes or beliefs to align with a group due to real or imagined pressure
what are the three types of conformity?
- compliance
- identification.
- internalisation
what is compliance?
outwardly conforming to fit in whilst privately disagreeing
what is identification?
conforming to expectations of a group because membership is desirable, but the behaviour/beliefs may only last as long as group association
what is internalisation?
deep conformity where individuals permanently adopt groups beliefs/behaviour
what is normative social influence?
NSI occurs when individuals conform to be liked , accepted and avoid rejection by a group.
often leads to compliance , where outward behaviour changes but private beliefs stay the same
what is informational social influence
ISI occurs when individuals conform because they believe the group has more accurate knowledge and better judgment in unfamiliar situations, often leads to internalisation
