what happened in ash’s experiment
Asch measured the number of times each participant conformed to the majority view. On average, about one third (32%) of the participants who were placed in this situation went along and conformed with the clearly incorrect majority on the critical trials.
Over the 12 critical trials, about 75% of participants conformed at least once, and 25% of participants never conformed.
In the control group, with no pressure to conform to confederates, less than 1% of participants gave the wrong answer.
what are the types of conformity
internalisation - accept the persons norms in both public and private.
can become permanent
identification - change due to the groups holding some type of value.
public change of opinion
compliance - going along with others in public but believing yourself in private
explanations of conformity
informational social influence - following the groups behaviour sue too not knowing what to believe
normative social influence - going with the group to avoid social rejection
which experiment relates to conformity of social roles
zimbardos prison experiment
what was the zimbardos prison experiment
Set up like a mock prison in the basement of a psychology department
Selected 21 emotionally stable men who had volunteered.
They were all randomly assigned to either a prisoner or guard (they were all encouraged to conform to their roles)
what was the findings of the prison experiment
guards really took to their roles and treated the prisoners horribly.
And prisoners within two days rebelled by ripping their uniforms.
After their rebellion they began to conform due to the abuse from the guards.
