What is compliance?
Temporary change as their original behaviour returns once not in that group
What is identification?
Change is temporary based on group membership
What is internalisation?
Change is permanent and we agree with them and start to value them
What is conformity?
A change in behaviour or beliefs as a result of social pressure. When someone acts or thinks differently because of the group they are in.
Individualism and collectivism are cultural factors, can you describe them?
Individualism is a ‘ME’ culture - emphasises independence e.g. UK, Australia, Canada, Netherlands and USA
Collectivism is a ‘WE’ culture - emphasises interdependence e.g. China, Korea, Mexico and Turkey
What are individual factors?
- Age
- ages 10-14 have high conformity rates - Sex
What can affect situational factors?
Conformity rates differ within a group depending on numbers
The size of majority can affect conformity rates
Unanimity of opinion increased conformity
