What is internalisation?
-externally changing behaviour to fit in with the group - also agreeing internally
What is identification?
-external + internal acceptance of majority influence - to gain acceptance
What is compliance?
-behaviour in order to fit in with the group
What is informational social influence?
-conform because we feel others are more knowledgeable than us
-they know something we don’t
What is normative social influence?
-influence of other people that leads us to conform in order to be liked + accepted by them
How does group size affect conformity?
-more likely to conform when in a large group
-group of more than 3 - rose by 30%]
-more likely to if all others are in agreement
-must be at least 3 to exert an influence
How does unamity affect conformity?
-more likely to conform when group is unanimous
-when joined by another P with right answer - fell from 32% to 5%
-more unanimous = more confidence
-vital in making a consistent majority view
How does task difficulty affect conformity?
-more likely to conform when tricky
-similar length = harder to judge
-uncertain of answer - looks to others for confirmation
-ISI is major for conformity when ambiguous
How were social roles investigated by Zimbardo?
-Stanford uni prison
-guard or prisoner
-fast identification with roles
-evidence shown that they believed prison was real
-guards became more demanding of obedience
-respective social roles became internalised
