Explain what is meant by internalisation (3 marks)
A
- where the behaviour or belief of the majority is accepted by the individual and becomes part of his or her own belief system
- the most permanent form of conformity
- lasts even if the majority is no longer present
- linked to ISI

why people change their behaviour to fit in terms of compliance ( 2 marks)
A
- Compliance refers to behaviour that involves going along with the majority, even if privately their views are not accepted
- wants to fit in and be liked, so will change his behaviour to be like the others but does not change his beliefs.

Explain what is meant by compliance (3 marks)
A
- Compliance is where the individual changes his or her own behaviour to fit in with the group
- may not necessarily agree with the behaviour/belief but they go along with it publicly
- for example, in Asch’s study, many of the naïve participants went along with the wrong answer so as not to look stupid
