conformity Flashcards
Identification
Middle level of conformity where someone changes their personal public behaviour and their own true beliefs, however only when they are in a group situation. Normally associated with short-term change as a result of social influence.
Compliance
Lowest level of conformity, person changes their public behaviour but not their own private beliefs. Usually, short-term change and a result of normative social influence.
Internalisation
he person agrees with the viewpoint or behaviours at hand, however they truly agree and are not purely agreeing for social acceptance.
What is minority influence
minority influence is when an individual or a minority within the group changes the behaviour of the larger group because they have been consistent with their answers changing the overall group answrs.
Moscovici et al planted two confederates in a group of six that had the task of naming the colours of a set of slides. Trur pps showed signs of being influenced - 8.42% of their responses followed the minority
Group size
Asch line study found that with fewer than three confederates, the level of compliance diminished. Increasing croup size only made a difference up to a certain point:
One confederate, almost no conformity
With two, conformity rate was 12%
With three, rate rose to 33%
Culture
Classic research done by Asch and Jenness only consisted of young Americans so findings cannot be generalised beyond that culture
Follow up studies have not always replicated the findings
One consistent cultural difference is that collectivist cultures show higher levels of conformity than individual cultures .
Collectivist cultures including America and south east asin countries value family and society over needs whereas individual cultures such as most western countries do not share the same emphasis
