- Compromise, each side gives away something in the process
- Integration, each side focusses efforts so that both sides gain

- emphasis on the axiom that it must bein all parties interest to avoid disputes by managing conflict in such a way that disputes do not arise

- there must be occasions where parties have legitimate disputes and that the techniques of dispute resolution are employed to bring about conclusion of dispute

- founded by Karl Marx, expressed the theory in terms of a struggle between classes
- others took theory forward, literature shows great diversity of conflict knowledge from every day to sophisticated theoretical writings
- only way to deal with it is consider than the theories apply to many/all conflicts
