Conflict Flashcards
Conflict
A struggle between two opposing forces or beliefs. It causes tension in the story and is usually resolved at the end.
Internal conflict
A struggle that is within a character (person vs. self).
External conflict
A character struggles against another character (person vs. person) or against some outside force (person vs. society, person vs. nature, person vs. fate, person vs. technology, person vs. supernatural).
Character vs.
character conflict
Any story featuring a hero and a villain is a classic, but it is really when one character struggles with another character.
Character vs. nature conflict
In this conflict, the protagonist is struggling against their environment; nature (like a storm) or a representation of nature, often it can be in the form of an animal.
Character vs. self conflict
A person’s struggle with his or her own prejudices or doubts or character flaws.
Character vs. society conflict
When the main character’s conflict extends to confronting the government, traditions, or laws of his culture. A classic example is struggling against racism.
