It is a level of self belief we may have in a variety of situations in sport or the feeling we have about our capability to be good at sport in general

Impact of sports confidence on performance

A

If an individual has a high sports confidence, this makes you more likely to achieve positive outcomes in sport. You will be more skilful, successful, competitive and more likely to take risks.
If you have a low sport confidence, this has a negative effect on performance and can cause underachievement

Impact of sports confidence on participation

A

High sports confidence will make you more likely to take part and compete. You are more likely to try new activities and volunteer for roles.
Low sports confidence makes you less likely to participate or compete in sport. You are not likely to try hard or attempt sports activities. You are unlikely to volunteer for roles and might never realise your talent in sport

Impact of sports confidence on self esteem

A

This is the feeling of self-worth.
If you have a high sports confidence you are more likely to have a higher self-esteem.
If you have a low sports confidence you are more likely to
have a lower self-esteem.
Positive self-esteem is vital for long term mental well-being as well as an ability to cope in life and in sporting situations that might not always be positive

Explain the 4 factors effecting self efficacy in banduras self efficacy theory

A
  1. Performance accomplishments: The previous successes that a performer has had. If a performer is reminded of previous mastery of tasks, self efficacy increases
  2. Vicarious experiences: Watching others of equal ability succeeding at the task. If a performer is shown an accurate demonstration, self efficacy increases
  3. Verbal persuasion: Being convinced that they have the ability to be successful at the task. Positive talk from a coach increases self efficacy. Experienced performers can use positive self talk, to persuade themselves
  4. Emotional arousal: The performer’s perception of their psychological and physiological state. If a performer can view their heightened arousal as readiness for performance, efficacy increases

Efficacy expectations: the expectation of the performer to achieve success / achieve their goal
Athletic performance: is now improved as self-efficacy is higher

Characteristics of Self Efficacy

A

Self Efficacy can exert a powerful influence on performance, by raising the performers expectation of success. This tends to be unstable and therefore changeable.
High self efficacy: Attribute success to internal factors, Adopt Approach behaviours, and have low Naf and high Nach, Seeks challenges and persevere with tasks
Low self efficacy: Attribute success to external factors, Adopt avoidance behaviours and have high Naf and low Nach, Gives up easily on tasks and doesn’t seek challenges.
