Despite signing a bunch of treaties to show the commitment from the colonies, indigenous leaders were excluded from the conferences discussing confederation.

Charlottetown 1864, Quebec city 1864, London December 1866 to March 1867. there were 36 men at each conference, know as the fathers of confederation.

- Fear of american expansion and aggression, because of the recent civil war, uniting the colonies would improve security and defence.

- UNiting the colonies would bring economic benefits, like the railway which would make trade opportunities.
