Conduction, Convection and Radiation Flashcards
What is conduction, convection and radiation used for?
Transferring heat from place to place.
What is better at absorbing light energy? Dark, matt surfaces, or light, shiny surfaces?
Dark, matt surfaces.
What is infrared radiation?
It is a type of electromagnetic radiation that involves waves and not particles.
How is radiation different to conduction and convection?
Radiation can pass through the vacuum of space.
What does the kinetic particle theory explain?
The properties of the different states of matters.
What are the arrangement and movement of particles in a solid?
They are close together and in a regular pattern.
They vibrate about in a fixed position.
What are the arrangement and movement of particles in a liquid?
They are close together and in a random pattern.
They move around each other.
What are the arrangement and movement of particles in a gas?
They are far apart and in a random pattern.
They move quickly in any direction.
What are the properties of a solid and why are they like this?
They have a fixed shape and cannot flow. They are like this because the particles cannot move from place to place.
They cannot be compressed or squashed. They are like this because the particles are close together and have no space to move into.
What are the properties of a liquid and why are they like this?
The flow into the shape of their container. They are like this because the particles can move around each other.
They cannot be compressed or squashed. They are like this because the particles are close together and have no space to move into.
What are the properties of a gas and why are they like this?
They flow and completely fill their container. They are like this because the particles can move quickly in all directions.
They can be compressed or squashed. They are like this because the particles are far apart and have space to move into.
How can heat energy move through a substance?
Conduction
What type of metals are good conductors of heat? Metals or non-metals?
Metals.
What are insulators?
Poor conductors of heat.
How is heat energy transferred from a hot place to a cooler place?
Convection
When does convection occur?
the surface area of the liquid is When particles with a lot of heat energy in a liquid or gas move and take the place of particles with less heat energy.
Why do liquids and gases expand when they are heated?
The particles in liquids and gases move faster when they are heated than they do when they are cold. As a result, the particles take up more volume. This is because the gap between particles widens, while the particles themselves stay the same size.
What is evaporation?
Evaporation involves a liquid changing into a gas.
What is condensation?
Condensation involves a gas changing into a liquid.
When does the rate of condensation increase?
If the temperature of the gas is decreased.
When does the rate of evaporation increase?
If the temperature of the liquid is increased. It is also affected if the surface area of the liquid is increased and if air is moving over the surface of the liquid.
What affects the rate at which an object transfers energy by heating?
The difference in temperature between an object and it’s surroundings.
The surface area and volume of the object.
The material used to make the object.
Nature of the surface that the object is touching.
