Q

What happened when we judged temperature with our hands?

A

When you put one hand in the cold water it feels cold and the hand in the hot water feels hot. When put in the room temperature water, the hot hand felt cold and the cold hand felt hot.

Q

List three points about making a simple alcohol thermometer:

A
  • with increasing temperature, the volume of liquid expands in the liquid moves up to tubes
  • alcohol reacts quickly to changing temperatures
  • alcohol has a lower freezing point allowing for the measurement of temperatures below 0•c

24
When atoms are split, energy is released. While there are many advantages to use the source of heat energy, there are many unsolved, and perhaps, unsolvable disadvantages
Nuclear energy
25
Coal-burning and hydroelectric generation stations are major producers of one of my main sources of heat: electricity.
Electrical energy
26
This produces heat through the push or pull that can cause friction and results in faster- moving particles.
Mechanical force
27
It takes advantage of the intense heat found within Earth. Some parts of the world uses renewable heat source more than other parts of the world.
Geothermal energy
28
This form of energy is released when fuel such as what is burned. The same thing happens when we eat food, an important fuel for our bodies. But this case, the heat is produced through the process of digestion.
Chemic energy
29
Give an example of electrical energy
Toaster
30
Even example of solar energy
Solar panels
31
Give an example of nuclear energy
Poles of pollution in factories
32
Give an example of mechanical energy
Rubbing hands together to stay warm
33
Give an example of chemical energy
Fire
34
What does water freeze at?
0•c
35
What does water boil at?
100•c
36
In junkyard wars, what was the key to raising the mini?
Using buoyancy
37
An object with positive buoyancy will what?
Float
38
What did the two teams do to lift their mini?
One used crane to lift the car and the other Sunk barrels, attached the barrels to min , filled oil drums with air and the car (hopefully) floated
39
Who won junkyard wars?
The orange team
40
Molecules in a solid are locked in place and vibrate > + ____ = faster
Heat
41
Solid turns into a liquid - _____ and ____ _______.
Vibrate and move around
42
The more the heat the _____ the particles _______.
Faster, move
43
Very hot= what?
Really fast and escape
44
Boil=?
Evaporates and particles escape and are free to wander around wherever and how fast they want
45
When you continue to heat gas, atoms will come apart which is called what?
Plasma
46
In the pop can crush experiment , why do the cans crush?
Steam occupies the space in the can since the air has been pushed out. In cold water, the steam is very rapidly cooled . Gas molecules are condensed back to the liquid so there is less steam and a vacuum mid created. The vacuum sucks up the left over air causing the can to crush.
47
In the ballon blow experiment, what happens?
The ballon is being filled with steam, which blows up the ballon with air. When the water cooled, the steam molecules slowed down and condensed back to liquid form.
48
In the ballon in a bottle experiment, what happened?
The space between the particles condensed, causing the balloon to be sucked in
49
What is an example of conduction?
Heat from hand transfers to the cone causing the ice cream to melt
50
What is an example of radiation?
The sun warms the earth
51
List three substances that conduct heat:
- Copper - metal - aluminum
52
What is the opposite of conduction?

Conduction
60
Name what type of heat this is: hot water heater
Convection
61
Name what type of heat this is: the air above fire
Convection or radiation
62
Why were metal spoons better conductors than wood and plastic spoons in the conduction experiment?
Because metals are good conductors and plastic and woods are insulators ( they don't heat up)
63
I'm the magic coin heat experiment, why did the lonnie push up off the bottle?
The pressure from the warm air pushed against the glass of cold air causing the lonnie to push up.
64
In the conduction-balloon explode experiment, why did the balloon pop but didn't when it had water in it?
The water absorbed the heat instead of the air and conducted the heat away from the balloon, causing the balloon not to explode.
