Conducting Observations Flashcards
What Is Behaviour?
Things we can see
Things we can hear
What Isn’t Behaviour?
Attitudes
Emotional States
Labels
What is an Operational Definition?
Definition of a written in specific or observable terms.
What is an observation period?
The time we use to observe behaviour
The more frequently a behaviour occurs..
the shorter our observation period can be.
Behaviour can change from day to day so..
‘repeated measures’ should be taken to ensure that observations are representative.
What is reactivity?
A change in a persons behaviour as a result of being observed.
3 ways to reduce reactivity?
- Making observations as unobtrusive as possible.
- Being present in environment prior to observations.
- Videotaping
What are the 4 dimensions of continuous measures of behaviour?
- Frequency.
- Rate.
- Duration.
- Latency
What is the frequency calculation?
Number of behaviours/Number of opportunities x100.
What is the calculation for rate?
Number of behaviours/Number of minutes of observation x100.
Define time sampling:
An estimate of behaviour when it is difficult to get a precise measure.
What are the 3 types of time sampling?
- Whole interval recording.
- Partial interval recording.
- Momentary time sampling.
